Math is a subject that many people consider to be one of the four main subjects that are taught in school. Within math, there are various levels for each grade until high school, where math is now separated. The branches that math is separated into include arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, algebra, and calculus. Math consists of two categories of standards, which are thinking math standards and content math standards. Thinking math standards focus on the nature of mathematical reasoning while content math standards are for specific math topics.
Four Thinking Math Standards:
Content Math Standards:
Math is all around us and helps to develop our reasoning, strengthen our analytical thinking skills, and generate practicality to apply in our life day to day. In math, when we solve equations, we are identifying relations that exist through equations that can be graphed and identified as a function, which can help us analytically think while judging the reliability in arguments. In various situations like intellectual debates or even arguments with peers, we must process to observe what kind of rational decision we will make and act upon. This is something that is done in math, where data is collected and broken down, then observed in the relations as to solve the parts in a rational way and come to a final decision. This is just one aspect of how essential and useful math is in our lives. So many students have a hard time believing that math can be used often in our lives, but it contains a variety of skill sets that we empower and practice through math skills as well as use the idea of percentages in events as simple as shopping.
